General Information
The Herbkersman Family Memorial Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship awarded in memory of Bernard Neil Herbkersman, Tom Herbkersman and their father, Don Herbkersman. Bern was a graduate of Cardinal Newman High School, class of ’83. He was one of seven sons of Don and Katie Herbkersman. Bern was killed in a tragic automobile accident on December 30, 1988 on his way to a skiing holiday with family. At the time of his death, his class decided to start a scholarship in his memory. So inspired by this show of love and support, Bern’s family made every effort to build this fund to the point where a scholarship would be given to a student the following year. When Don Herbkersman and Tom Herbkersman (also a CNHS graduate of the class of 1979) passed away, the family changed the name of the scholarship to the Herbkersman Family Memorial Scholarship.
Bern was known for his zest for life and great joy in spending time with his friends and family. All who knew him remember his creativity, wit, positive attitude, and infectious sense of humor. With this in mind, the application for this scholarship will not be limited to a traditional essay; rather, if the student so chooses, he/she can submit a video that conveys where and how they find the joy in life.
