The Spirit of Cardinal Newman 2025

Required

THE “SPIRIT OF CARDINAL NEWMAN” AWARD

The Cardinal Newman School crest is ever present in our school. It is visible to students, faculty, staff and friends, as they experience life at Cardinal Newman School. This school symbol greets everyone daily in the rotunda and in our formal publications and letters.

Inscribed in our crest are the three Latin words:  VERITAS, INTEGRITAS, FIDELITAS which mean TRUTH, INTEGRITY, FIDELITY.  Above these virtues is the Latin phrase COR AD COR LOQUITUR which means Heart Speaks to Heart; this was St. John Henry Newman’s motto.

Together, these three virtues embody the ultimate goal of Cardinal Newman School, as well as the spirit of St. John Henry Newman: “that students will become self-disciplined learners who also demonstrate respect, integrity, responsibility and a sense of social justice as they prepare to live lives of truth, integrity and fidelity.”

Guidelines

Each applicant is asked to compose an essay in which he/she:

  • Reflects on the appropriate grade-level quotation from St. John Henry Newman

  • Articulates, in an essay, how the quotation pertains to him/her personally, and how it relates to our school's motto and virtues

Quotations for each grade level:

  • Current 7th grade/rising 8th grade students: “Let us act on what we have, since we have not what we wish.”

  • Current 8th grade/rising 9th grade students: “We should ever conduct ourselves towards our enemy as if he were one day to be our friend.”

  • Current 9th grade/rising 10th grade students: “We can believe what we choose. We are answerable for what we choose to believe."

  • Current 10th grade/rising 11th grade students: “Nothing would be done at all if one waited until one could do it so well that no one could find fault with it.”

  • Current 11th grade/rising 12th grade students: “God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.  I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next.  I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons."

In the event a student’s total Financial Aid/Scholarship package exceeds the total cost of tuition, the overage will be deducted from the amount of Financial Aid.

The essay should not exceed two, double-spaced typed pages and must be turned in by March 14, 2025 to Mrs. Amy Yoho in The Advancement Office.
