We offer a variety of two-dimensional forms of expression at Cardinal Newman including Painting, Drawing and Printmaking, and we are developing our Studio Art AP 2-D and 3-D design courses.
Painting
Painting allows us to declutter our minds by taking our ideas and beautifully transforming them into a physical form. Painting is one of the oldest form of self-expression dating all the way back to cave paintings. In Painting 1, we learn about color theory, artist styles, watercolor techniques, and interpretation.
This semester long course will focus primarily on painting and its various mediums. Mediums will include but are not limited to acrylic, watercolor, and oil. Students will explore the elements of art, the principles of design, and art history to create symbols to convey meaning. They will also learn how to compare and contrast works of art, use art vocabulary, and make connections between visual arts and other disciplines. Lessons will be structured to encourage perceptual awareness and develop critical thinking skills. This course along with one other introductory 2-D art course will allow you to move into the year-long Advanced Art offering. Note: Course fee for materials is $35
Drawing
This semester long course provides a basic foundation in drawing and design skills using a variety of mediums. Areas of study include linear perspective, realism and abstraction, development of the elements of art and principles of design, art vocabulary, art history and the development of a personal form of expression. They will also learn how to compare and contrast works of art and make connections between visual arts and other disciplines. Lessons will be structured to encourage perceptual awareness and develop critical thinking skills. This course along with one other introductory 2-D art course will allow you to move into the year-long Advanced Art offering.
Printmaking
This semester long course will focus on the various mediums of printmaking including block, vinyl, screen printing and lithography. Students will explore the elements of art, the principles of design, and art history to create symbols to convey meaning. They will also learn how to compare and contrast works of art, use art vocabulary, and make connections between visual arts and other disciplines. Lessons will be structured to encourage perceptual awareness and develop critical thinking skills. This course along with one other introductory art course will allow you to move into the year-long Advanced Art offering.
