Merit Scholarships
Cardinal Newman offers the following merit scholarships to incoming seventh and ninth grade students:
Angela Merici Scholarship
St. Angela was a Catholic educator who founded the Ursuline Sisters. These same Sisters came to
Columbia in the nineteenth century, establishing Ursuline Academy, which later became
Cardinal Newman School. St. Angela Merici dedicated her life to developing the gifts of all
her students, no matter what their background. This scholarship is reserved for students who
demonstrate outstanding potential for academic and personal growth.
Monsignor Murphy Scholarship
Monsignor Murphy was the Pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Columbia. He worked
tirelessly to ensure that students had a Catholic education available to them. He was, for many,
a true role model. This scholarship is reserved for students who are academically gifted and who demonstrate strong character as well as leadership potential.
Sr. Julienne Guy Scholarship
Sister Julienne, an Ursuline, graduated from Ursuline High School. Much of her work was dedicated to Catholic education in Columbia, including fourteen years here at Cardinal Newman. Whether as teacher or school leader, she always sought to bring out the best in all her students. This scholarship is reserved for students of high academic ability who have also demonstrated a strong commitment to scholarship.

Principal’s Scholarship
