ardinal Newman School recognizes that summer reading and other intellectual activities serve to stimulate, enrich and reinforce academic skills when students are on hiatus during the summer vacation months.
Additionally, appropriate reading provides the best long-range preparation for the SAT/ACT, which our students will take over the course of their high school years.
Below is a listing of required summer reading for all Cardinal Newman students. Find your/your child’s grade to locate the selections to be read this summer. Links to study guides for each selection are located under the book titles.
While test dates may vary from class to class, all students should expect to be tested on their designated selections as early as the first day of the 2007-2008 school year.
*Please note: To aid in comprehension, students are to keep a reading journal. Information regarding the journal is explained in the study guide. All English students will use the same study guide. All College Preparatory English students will read one required novel. All Honors English students will read two required novels.
On the first day of school, students will submit their reading journals to their English teachers. On the second day of class, students may utilize their journals during the assessment. The type of assessment may include: short answer responses or multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank or timed essays or a combination of these examples.
