This area's only Catholic high school is experiencing growing pains. Just announced Wednesday night, officials will now prepare to move the school about eight miles from the current campus.
Cardinal Newman, Columbia's only grades seven through 12 Catholic school, is expanding and moving to a 25-acre site near Farrow Road and I-20.
"The building is older, worn, it doesn't handle us," says Principal Jacqualine Kasprowski.
Kasprowski says the school has outgrown the campus on Forest Drive. They desperately need more classrooms and better facilities. "There are no seats in here. It's not a true fine arts facility. I would love to see an auditorium that seats 400 people."
Parents learned about the expansion plans from a videotaped message from Bishop Robert Baker. Parent Tom Regan says, "The location of school is ideal for whole Columbia Metro area."
Talley Lattimore agrees, "I think it's positive stop forward for school. It will give us facility all on one site."
"You can have your home anywhere as long as you stick together," says Gloria Lattimore.
The principal says the expansion will allow them to expand the student body and construct a more efficient campus. "You do what you have to do in order to make things happen, but it would be nice to have everything on one piece of property."
The plans haven't been drafted yet, but officials say they could be in their new school around 2010.
